Our Mission
The Martin Wong Foundation, a nonprofit organization, was founded to provide art scholarships for selected universities:
Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. Martin Wong attended HSU and majored in art. After graduation, he continued to live and work in Humboldt County, before moving to New York. The Martin Wong Scholarships presented at HSU recognize this important stage of the artist's education and career. HSU installed a Martin Wong Studio in the Art Building in 2005.
San Francisco State University in San Francisco, California. Martin Wong grew up and developed as an artist in San Francisco. SFSU's art department and gallery are recognized for their excellence. The Martin Wong Scholarships presented at SFSU recognize San Francisco's importance in the artist's personal history. SFSU dedicated a Martin Wong Gallery in the Fine Art Building in 2007.
Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. Martin Wong's father, Benjamin Wong Fie, attended ASU where he was on the football team and played in the Sun Bowl. During his life, Ben supported the ASU Alumni Association with donations to the Athletics Program, which is also continued. The Benjamin Wong Fie Scholarships for ASU art students, supported by the Martin Wong Foundation, recognize the relationship between Martin Wong's father and the school. In 2007, ASU installed a Martin Wong Painting and Drawing Studio in the Art Building.
New York University in New York City. Martin Wong Scholarships are offered at NYU, whose Fales Library Special Collections already has an important collection of Martin Wong's papers, relating to his life and important career in New York, which is available for study online. NYU mounted a 16" x 14" bronze plaque in the Art Building "In Recognition of the Martin Wong Foundation For Its Ongoing Support of Studio Art Scholarships."
Another important component of the Martin Wong Foundation's activities is an active Art Education program centered in New York. Beginning in 2003, this program has been directed by the renowned artist, Sandra Pink Fabara of Pink Smith Designs. Fabara has created several major murals, working collaboratively with students from the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Queens, New York.
PPOW Gallery, located at 511 West 25th Street, New York, NY 10001, continues to manage exhibitions and sales of the work of Martin Wong.
